Guillaume
Roux, aged 22, found a job in cinema animation even before he
had completed his third year of study in “3D Cinema Animation and Special
Effects” at the ESMA. Here he tells of the role the school played in the
beginning of his high powered career.
What do you remember best about studying at the ESMA?
Guillaume ROUX:
When I arrived at the school, I didn't know anything about computer
science. At the time the only thing I knew for certain was that I
wanted to make animated films. I met the right people at the ESMA!
My teachers taught me the basics of the profession and orientated me to specialising in animation.
I
would like to thank Gérard Raucoules, director of the 3D department and
Jean-Louis Garcia, the animation teacher. I do believe the school and
its teaching staff play a decisive role in a student's success, however
the most important factor to be successful at one's studies and one's
subsequent profession is to be motivated and determined.
Did the school help you to find a job?
G. R.
The ESMA is very supportive when you are starting out on your career.
It organises trips regularly to animation festivals (Annecy, Clermont,
Imagina, etc.). It was at the Annecy International Animation Festival
that I met some of the professionals who were so impressed with some of
my technical and artistic qualities that they offered me a job
immediately. That was how come I was taken on before completing "Exit",
my end of year film.
What are you doing now professionally?
G. R.
I'm working for a company which specialises in 3D cinema animation. Our
films are designed for amusement parks and adventure parks as well as
IMAX Cinemas.
Jérémy Degrusson is a graphic designer and a 3D animator in
charge of special effects for various CGI films such as "Encounter in
the Third Dimension" and "The Haunted Castle" by Ben Stassen. Jérémy
DEGRUSSON is quite a name at IMAX and employs several ESMA 3D and
Special Effects graduates, including Guillaume ROUX, in his Belgian
company.
How did you come to take on Guillaume ROUX?
Jérémy DEGRUSSON.
I met Guillaume at the International Animation Film Festival in Annecy,
in June 2005. When I looked through his portfolio I immediately saw
that he was talented.
When you meet a young guy like him, it doesn't take you long to decide to take him on…
What would you say regarding his grasp of the subject and his competence at the end of his course?
J. D. During his course at the ESMA Guillaume mastered the basics extremely well.
Are you happy with him?
J. D. Very satisfied. I only hope we haven't tamed him too much…
Would you contact the ESMA again if you were looking for people?
J. D.
We currently have about a dozen ESMA graduates working with us. If we
want to add people to our team in the future we will of course contact
the ESMA.
